WHAT IS BUSINESS COACHING?

No business, not even the most celebrated Fortune 500 companies, is perfect. A business coach will work together with the leaders in the management team to identify what needs adjustment in order to improve operations and achieve subsequent results.  The coach helps the leader define with clarity what goals need to be reached, what constraints are preventing them from reaching those goals, and following a coaching program that focuses on overcoming these obstacles to reach the desired goal.  Leaders develop greater insight and powerful skills that will enable them to run their business more successfully. 

KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BUSINESS COACHING & BUSINESS CONSULTING

Many business owners may use the terms business coach and business consultant interchangeably. Often, business coaches also provide consulting, so it is not necessarily an unfair comparison. However, the key difference in the two lies in their approach.  A business coach focuses on the business owner and identifies areas where their leadership and management style can be adjusted, whereas business consultants focus on the business itself.  Consultants will find areas of weakness, obstacles, threats, or untapped opportunities and provide explicit solutions to improve performance immediately.  They tend to work apart from the business owner and once their scope is completed, they are no longer in the picture.  A business coach works as a "non-equity" partner, committed to the leader and their goals, with a keen focus on improving the abilities of the business owner.

WHEN SHOULD YOU HIRE A BUSINESS COACH?

Some business owners had a vision for their business and nothing more, but many spent years in school, studying, reading, talking with peers and mentors, and made use of every resource available to maximize their odds for success. Business is, at times, a numbers game, and making good use of all resources optimizes the odds of success and helps you and your business realize real results that are measurable and attainable. If you’ve struggled to meet or exceed projections, you should consider a business coach. Even if your operation has run smoothly, the team is performing well, and the numbers are up, it still is prudent to bring in a business coach to help fine tune the leadership skills of the business owner. We as business owners didn’t get into the business to settle for an okay operation when greatness is in reach!

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM A BUSINESS COACH?

Expect to go over every aspect of the operation with a fine-toothed comb. Be prepared to provide and analyze team dynamics, review your company's original business plan, re-define the ideal future you see for yourself and your compay, identify current constraints or ongoing challenges, search for areas of improvement, and look at your key performance indicators in order to paint an accurate picture of the business, where it stands now, and where you expect or desire that it should be going. Once your coach has specific knowledge of your operation and goals, the real work begins in creating actionable plans to develop skills to achieve those goals in a specific, measurable, reasonable, and time-based manner. You should expect to be challenged and you should expect to put in some hard work, but you should also expect to make positive changes that bring about positive results.
